I started painting at lunchtime and continued into the evening with just a short break to have some tea and get the children to bed. There are some parts of this painting that I really love, but unfortunately I forgot to take step-by-step photos and there was a crucial moment where I really wish I had stopped and taken one.
Having painted in all the detail, my family really liked it and so did I but I went on to start painting the background. I chose to use a muted, pastel blue and pale lemon, rather than the bright yellow and blue from the t.shirt (just hinting at the original inspiration) but as this is acrylic paint the colour is more intense than I like. I remember now that on my art course in 2016-17 I always used to water the acrylic down and my paintings always had a very 'light touch'. Too late to do anything about it now though. I'm so annoyed! If only I had taken a photo and stopped there, ready to look again with fresh eyes in the morning. I wish I hadn't ploughed into painting the backgrounds tonight; it would have been a better painting without that. But hindsight is a wonderful thing! If I had taken a before and after photo then you could form your own opinion but sadly, I can only show the finished article. I hope you like it. If nothing else, it shows a little of my emotions as there is a definite 'sad face' element in one part of this painting!
