I spent roughly 4 hours this evening creating my second piece of artwork for the project. Family were busy in the kitchen baking bread and cooking dinner; I positioned myself quietly at the breakfast bar and got to work covering a small, circular cake board in brown baking parchment. This was the board that my 40th birthday cake from my brother had come on. I wanted to create a mixed media/collage-type piece this time as I always enjoy doing those and I also thought it would be fun to experiment with different surfaces rather than resorting to art canvasses every time (I still have a long way to go to reach 40 pieces so this could become a regular feature!) I had no pre-planned ideas as to what this piece would be but I did choose a few different materials to use with natural tones. Part of the joy of this kind of art is that there is no right or wrong and so much of my time was spent moving little scraps of paper around the board until something looked or felt right. I felt it had potential as an abstract landscape but this became less clear when I asked my family which way up they thought it should go...I value their opinions, however I can't help help but follow my instinct which was the opposite of what they had advised!
