Today marks my daughter's birthday. She shares it with her Grandma who sadly has dementia. E's Grandma and Grandad 'popped' down from Birmingham today to celebrate both birthdays. E is 13 today; a teenager at at last! I spent this afternoon baking and decorating a cake. E loves surprise cakes so I planned for this one to be filled with Skittles. I baked the cakes at the house and then after collecting F from school he helped me to fill the cake and decorate the top. When E cut into the cake and the skittles all fell out she was thrilled. I was impressed as I'd not made one before and the multi-coloured striped sponges worked well too! I also made a mini cake for Grandma using the small section out of the middle. We put a disc of fondant icing on top, wrapped a rainbow ribbon around the outside and popped a candle in the centre. We sang to them separately meaning they both had the chance to blow out their own candles!
Today reminded me how much I love baking and cake decorating. I haven't done anything like this in years and particularly since moving into the caravan; the oven here just isn't up to it! Once the art project is properly up and running again I hope to be able to put a bit more time aside for other hobbies. For now I really can't allow myself to be distracted. Focus Lucy!! I need to focus!
