The first job for today was to paint the black onto the background of canvas B. This was time consuming and needed several layers of paint to get the solid colour I like. Not my most enjoyable part of this piece and I still have canvas A to do! Arghh, what have I started?! It's pretty taxing keeping in the lines too. Very tricky work. The reason I began on B, not A was down to a significant mark on canvas B which looked like a tea stain (originally this was Canvas A but having drawn them out I decided they look better as a diptych the other way round!) I couldn't cope with the stain so I painted over it with black and that was the starting point for the background. I just went around the canvas from there, painting every other section in black and leaving white in between.

I really liked the colours used in the original pictures but I wanted to carry on with rainbow inspiration for this piece so I decided to colour the circles in all colours of the rainbow rather than just one or two. I started today with blue on the largest circle; blue because of the NHS and I wanted this to be the dominant colour. It worked out by chance that I'd drawn enough for each colour to be used on two circles, with just one colour being used for three.
